Foolish French Idiots

While trigger-happy partisans often proved long on enthusiasm and short on actual fighting ability, too many American officers ignored their real value and adopted the views of one infantry lieutenant who called the French Forces of the Interior the “damndest bunch of clowns I ever saw in my life…Foolish French Idiots we used to call them.”

David W. Hogan, Jr., “US Army Special Operations in World War II”

French Forces of the Interior (FFI) were French resistance fighters who, according to official mythology, helped a great deal to liberate France from the Nazis.

Other historians (see this YouTube video) claim that the French resistance fought more with one another rather than with Germans. Allegedly, at the end of World War II there was a serious threat of civil war breaking out in France between competing factions.

American and French rapes in Archdiocese of Munich-Freising

The Archdiocese of Munich-Freising is approximately comparable to the government district of Upper Bavaria. On its sparsely populated 12,000 square kilometers live more than 2 million people, 90 % of them Catholic. [According to reports by Catholic priests] In 21 communities there are reports of “multiple” rapes without a more precise number. 113 cases are described explicitly (with name and often address).

If we assume that there were, on average, 3 cases in 21 communities that provided no precise data, then the total number of rapes during the first three months of occupation (first the French, then the American one) amounts to about 200 cases.

The difference between American rapes on German women vs. American rapes on French and British women

Another peculiarity that the higher army officials notice is this: The GIs rape German women not only more frequently, but often more violently than they did earlier with the women of their allies in England and France. According to the highest military prosecutor, German victims

* are more often injured,
* beaten to the unconsciousness with fists or weapons,
* more often abused in presence of their husbands and relatives, and
* more often penetrated orally or anally.
